The
training is separated in 5 different fun levels. In each, the kids
learn the knowledge and skills needed to
become a safe SCUBA diver. At the same time, they experience
how important discipline and team spirit are to reach the goal.
The safety of the kids is the number one concern. Therefore SCUBA
RANGERS programs are only allowed to be taught by specially trained
instructors. The kid’s training fun takes place in the pool (or under
confined water conditions in a protected area) down to a maximum depth
of 12 feet.
SCUBA RANGERS is not just a diving
course, it is a long term activity where the kids can stay active in a
SCUBA RANGERS Club! During
the club sessions they learn about our environment, get more diving
experience, and have a fun time together. They will try underwater
photography or night diving with torches in the swimming pool, visit
zoos and aquariums, go to the cinema, or take part in other fun, yet
challenging activities.
The SCUBA RANGERS
Philosophy
As
a children’s outreach organization, the SCUBA RANGERS has a
responsibility to promote good values. To keep it simple and fun, we’ve
designed the SCUBA RANGERS Star, which defines the five points of a
successful SCUBA RANGER:
Proper Knowledge:
Rangers must learn the rules of responsible diving.
Proper Skills: Rangers must learn and practice the basic scuba
skills.
Proper Equipment:
Rangers must learn to use basic scuba equipment, and should own
snorkeling equipment, and properly maintain and care for all equipment.
Proper Experience: Rangers should maintain diving proficiency, dive
within their limits, and continue to learn more about scuba and water
exploration.
Responsibility:
Rangers should honor their responsibilities to their families, their
community, the environment, and themselves.
HOW TO BECOME A SCUBA RANGER?
It’s
easy. Scuba Rangers is for any active kid from ages 8 and 12. You must
have basic swimming skills, be comfortable in the water, and be in good
health.
You can become a Scuba Ranger in five
steps. During each step, you will learn skills and obtain the knowledge
you need to become a true Scuba Ranger. These are the steps:
Step 1
Red Ranger– You will be able to show how good your swimming
skills are and you will learn how to snorkel with a mask, a snorkel and
fins. Furthermore, you will be able to demonstrate how to help other
children. The most important thing is having fun!
Step 2 White Ranger–
Your instructor will tell you everything you need to know about your
diving equipment. What is it for and how to use it? You then get to go
into the pool with your equipment and play!
Step 3 Blue Ranger–
You will learn new diving exercises in the pool, like how to float in
the water like a fish.
Can you believe that? You don’t sink to the bottom, and you don’t
float up either!
Step 4 Silver Ranger–
Together with the other kids, you play cool games under water while
wearing your diving equipment. This way you’ll practice all the diving
techniques you have just learned.
Step 5 Demo Ranger–
If you are ready, you can show your parents, your brothers and sisters,
and all of your friends what you have been learning. They will be proud
of you for it! It’s time to be a star!
After completing each step, you will
receive a reward- you will get a ribbon around your snorkel, so all the
other kids know that you already have accomplished a lot. Being a Demo
Ranger makes you very special, and after you have taken the Ranger Oath,
you are a true Scuba Ranger.
Now,
as a Demo Ranger you can become a Scuba Ranger Club member. This is a
club especially for you, which enables you to do a lot of fun things
and, of course, you will continue diving in the pool. For example, you
can learn what the names of those beautiful fish you saw on TV, or how
to search for an object under water in the swimming pool. Some Scuba
Rangers go to the aquarium together or go see a movie about diving. You
can think of so many fun activities which are related to diving!
And you know what the best part is?
If your classmates at school, or maybe even your parents, see and hear
how much fun diving can be, they might want to try it too!
SCUBA RANGERS SPECIALTIES - THE
REAL FUN!
SCUBA RANGERS Specialties are fun
activities involving different kinds of scuba equipment. Some
specialties don’t involve diving, but focus on becoming a better person.
All Specialties count toward advanced SCUBA RANGERS ratings.
-
Buddy Ranger-
Invite up to five of your friends to try snorkeling or scuba in the
pool. It’s a great time to show your skills and get your friends
involved.
-
Civics Ranger-
Help in your home and community. Almost anything counts, such as
cleaning your room, or participating in community events. After you
get 12 sign-offs from the people you have helped, you get credit for
the Civics Ranger specialty.
-
Computer Ranger-
Familiarize yourself with how computers are used in SCUBA diving and
diving research. Use the internet to find diving-based web sites and
play with a diving computer in the pool. Valuable in the water and
out, the skills you learned will assist you in both future academic
and diving careers.
-
Equipment Ranger-
Gain additional knowledge, skills and experience with different
types of diving equipment.
-
Marine Life Ranger-
Learn about aquatic fish, plants and animals that live in oceans,
lakes and rivers. You get to see cool photos and maybe even visit
an aquarium or tide pool.
-
Maze Range
- Test your buoyancy and scuba skills in an underwater "obstacle
course." Skill stations are set up in the shallow end of a pool and
have a specific skill for you to perform. It’s underwater fun at
it’s finest!
-
Mile Ranger-
The goal of Mile Ranger is to swim a full mile in the pool with the
assistance of your mask, snorkel and fins. You have several
sessions in which to complete the mile.
-
Navigation Ranger-
Learn how to use an underwater compass, and natural navigation
techniques (navigating with no compass). Knowing how to get back to
shore or the boat comes in handy when you start diving in open
water.
-
Night Ranger-
Practice your skills and play games- at night with the pool lights
off! It’s awesome! But don’t worry, you’ll have an underwater
diving light so you can see what you’re doing.
-
Rescue Ranger-
Learn what it takes to help your buddy if he or she is in trouble
while diving. Some clubs invite police and rescue professionals to
tell you about their jobs and what they do to help people.
-
Search Ranger-
Learn the basic techniques for finding lost objects under water.
It’s not exactly what you need to become a treasure hunter, but
it’s a good start.
Plus, many
SCUBA RANGERS Instructors create lots of cool Specialties for their
local Clubs.
